Data centre hosting

Data centre hosting involves a facility used to house mission critical computer systems and associated components. Benefits of hosting in our data centres involve:

Our data centre hosting facilities include, MANOC®, the second largest internet exchange in the UK and Telehouse Europe, Europe’s leading internet exchange.

How do you get into data centres?

In order to view a data centre, you should firstly contact the company that owns it at least 24 hours beforehand. The company will then give you the details of what it is they require in order to allow anyone (engineers or visitors) to be allowed into the facility. If a client has their own rack space within the data centre then they should contact them directly and provide details of each person arriving. If a client has a server or solution that is provided by the ISP then they need to be contacted first.

On arrival at the data centre, the security guards check photo ID’s and then ask each person to sign in with their details. A security guard would then allow these people access to the facility, letting engineers access their equipment directly, or the ISP providing the space would provide their own engineer to accompany the visitors to the equipment.

How secure are data centres?

Data centres are a secure location for Web hosting servers. They are designed to assure that the servers and the data housed on them are protected from environmental hazards and security breaches. Data centres have 24 hours a day 365 days a year security cover across the whole facility. Pressure sensors are placed under the floor and there are motion detectors, making the data centre even more secure.

In case of fires the centre will contain protection equipment to make sure that any potential hazard is detected at the earliest stage. There is also full CCTV coverage across external areas and all internal floors/suites. Security guards and roaming patrols monitor on site and across all buildings.

Green data centres

Although data centres already have to meet strict standards when it comes to serviceability, reliability and performance, a green initiative within a centre can have many advantages.

The electricity used by Internet hosting facilities and data centres worldwide is estimated to be 0.8% of total world electricity consumption. People have become increasingly concerned about the contribution of these centres – which are the backbone of the Internet - to climate change.

With the threat that firms may be penalised in the future for excessive carbon footprints, businesses need to act now. Faced with these urgent warnings, companies are focusing on improving the energy efficiency in their data centres.
